Thank you to our correspondant in Bourges, Claude Boutet.
Press in Bourges
In Bourges you can buy a lot of newspapers either national papers or local papers and sometimes foreign papers (Mainly English and German). The national press is as all the papers in others countries with weekly magazines, daily or weekly papers, monthly magazines etc..
Amongst all these papers very little are published in English. The paper “Le Monde” is published sometimes with The Gardian. Le Monde is rather an “Intellectual paper” read by a certain level of people (in my opinion, they think they are Intellectuals…). You can test it and see for yourself. As in England, you can find lots of kinds of papers (tabloids, humorous papers, soppy papers, specialized magazines and so on…).
In Bourges there are two main local daily newspapers:
- The “Berry Républicain”
- The “Nouvelle République”.
Actually, these papers belong to a “press group”, one located in Clermont-Ferrand( Town situated 200 Km to the south, of Bourges) for the Berry Républicain, the second located in Tours (Town situated 150 km to the west of Bourges) for the Nouvelle République.
The two papers are compiled almost in the same way:
The first and last pages for national information (government, economy, others countries and so on)
The inside pages contain the local news.
What does local news mean? It includes everything what appends in the area we call the “Département du Cher”. It is an area (around 100kmx100km) ran by the same administration with a prefect and an elected Council (maybe equivalent to a county in England?). You can read or see information in the small towns or villages sometimes interesting sometimes not! When a journalist deals with news that is not interesting we say: he is in charge of “run down dogs”.
Alongside these two papers a few exist too. For example, there is « La Voix du Sancerrois »,a weekly paper which covers the area around Sancerre, town very well known of English people thanks to wine!
