Tango Tango ...

Bourges ‘on alcohol’

During the last festival in Bourges (Printemps de Bourges), where concerts are more for young people, a new phenomenon appeared last year and has increased this year. In the evening, every square in the town centre and in the festival alleys was crowded with people drinking. Strolling about, a lot of people had glasses and bottles in their hands and inside them it was not clear water. The contents can be beer, sometimes wine, alcohol and sometimes a blend of odd products! The most addicted to this new fashion are often teenagers who get younger and younger each year. The game is to get drunk quickly and they call that “la défonce” (from the French verb: défoncer). I think you say “binge drinking” in English. After that, there are “the side effects” that is to say: fights, wounds, sickness, depraved behaviour and probably at the best, a headache the next day! People say they have a wild time but they never laugh when they are in this state! They look rather sad.
Alcoholism is not a novelty in France, because it has existed for ages. The difference is the way of drinking alcohol. Before it was more with wine (people drank “un p’tit blanc” a glass of white wine) and fruit alcohol (“une p’tite goutte”: in my region, a small glass of alcohol). They used to drink in pubs before (yes, in the morning!) or after their work and often every day! Now, beer has replaced wine and alcohol is more whisky, vodka … Sometimes they blend that with Coca-Cola, beer, wine…! The big difference is that they also take drugs, a phenomenon almost unknown forty years ago. The blend is often explosive!!
Why do they do that? I have no answer. Maybe because they don’t have an aim in their lives and too much money in their pockets!
Alcohol is not a bad thing but not beyond fun…
